Thunderstorms and lightning

The Tampa Bay area is renowned for thunderstorms and as one of the lightning capitals of the world, and there are things you should know about staying safe when these storms are present. Some thunderstorms can be seen approaching, while others can hit without warning. Lightning can occur even on bright sunny days. If you can hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. When you can hear thunder or see lightning, it is not a good idea to walk on the beach, continue to play golf or stand under a tree or other tall object that is out in the open.

During the summer months, especially in the afternoon, it is important to keep an eye out for weather changes such as the rapid gathering of clouds, particularly those that appear dark and towering, and the sounds of thunder. If the threat becomes severe enough, the local radio and TV stations are very good at alerting listeners about thunderstorm warnings and tornado watches and warnings.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued by the National Weather Service when the conditions are such that damaging winds above 57 MPH and/or large hail (3/4-inch or larger) can be expected.

Severe thunderstorms also are well known for spawning tornadoes and waterspouts (tornadoes over water). When severe thunderstorm warnings are issued, it is time to locate a safe place within your home and stayed tuned to weather channels for updated information on the progress of the storm.
